True Green co-author Kim McKay discusses environmental communications in
The Australian

 EVERYWHERE you look there seems to be someone inventively half-killing themselves in a bid to raise awareness of some issue or other.
Whether it’s running a marathon in the Arctic, riding a bicycle across the desert or crossing an ocean in something unseaworthy.

Without an effective publicity campaign, however, all too many intrepid exploits pass almost unnoticed. Nothing pains environmental communications expert Kim McKay more than hearing about an extraordinary feat in the name of an important cause only well after it has ended.

“There’s no point just putting out a press release the day you set out and another one the day you get back,” McKay says. “A lot of people using adventure activities to try and highlight (an) issue forget that they are essentially communications campaigns.

“It’s a very competitive environment out there to cut through the clutter and gain attention for your endeavour.”

In 1989, McKay helped launch one of the world’s first environmental campaigns when she and Ian Kiernan held Clean Up Sydney Harbour Day. The next year it became Clean Up Australia Day, now an annual event.

“When we started Clean Up Australia we recognised from the beginning this was primarily a communications campaign to get people out and involved,” McKay says. “We had a small budget, but I made sure we put the bulk of that into communications.”

After more than 20 years’ involvement in green issues, including seven years in the US working for Discovery Channel and National Geographic Channels International, in 2004 McKay set up Sydney marketing consultancy Momentum2, which specialises in environmental campaigns.

Most recently, Momentum2 handled the media for the arrival of the Plastiki, a plastic-bottle boat that sailed from San Francisco to Sydney to draw attention to ocean pollution.

The arrival generated massive worldwide coverage, with 80 local and international media organisations accredited to attend the landing. Reports by Reuters were carried in more than 180 papers. Momentum2 estimates local newspaper, radio, TV and online coverage gained 117 million views.

McKay says the key to the campaign’s success was the use of technology to maintain awareness throughout the Plastiki’s 129 days at sea. Crew members wrote 116 blog posts, sent 879 Twitter messages and did more than 50 interviews using satellite phone and Skype video link, generating more than 300 print articles, more than 200 TV and radio stories and about 12,000 online mentions.

About 14,000 people registered with the Plastiki’s website, which received more than a million page views, with more than 7000 downloading a widget enabling them to track its trip. Almost 8000 people became Facebook fans.

The biggest media coup: on Earth Day, expedition leader David de Rothschild did a live cross on The Oprah Winfrey Show, one of the most watched programs in the US.

“That’s pretty much the gold standard in terms of PR hits in America,” says McKay. “The Plastiki set a new precedent for communicating in that way. That sort of connectivity is vital now.”

Happy World Environment Day 2010

WED has been commemorated on the 5th of June since 1972. WED is one of the principal vehicles through which the United Nations stimulates worldwide awareness of the environment and encourages political attention and action.

WED 2010 is aimed to be the biggest WED celebration ever and the UN counts on you to make this happen – ‘organize a neighborhood clean-up, stop using plastic bags and get your community to do the same, plant a tree or better yet organize a collective tree planting effort, walk to work, start a recycling drive . . . the possibilities are endless’.
For more information about WED 2010 see http://unep.org/wed/2010/english/

Also see explorer David de Rothschild’s World Environment Day message here .
David de Rothschild is leading The Plastiki expedition -  a catamaran made of 12,500 recycled plastic bottles. The Plastiki voyage has been created to focus global attention on the problem of plastic in the world’s oceans and waterways – particularly the plastic in the north Pacific gyre.
The Plastiki will be arriving in Sydney in mid-July. There will be some exciting events to celebrate its arrival - get updates at betruegreen.com.

True Green co-author Kim McKay is opening the BOXWORLD exhibition at Mosman Art Gallery, Sydney on Friday 4 June to celebrate World Environment Day.

BOXWORLD is a spectacular miniature city made almost entirely of recycled materials. It is created by one man, Warren Thomas, an environmentalist and model maker. Originally from Tasmania, Warren believes in the value of the three R’s: Reduce, Re-Use and Recycle.

The exhibition is open until Sunday 18 July 2010. For more information click here.

Clean Up Co-Founder and Deputy Chairwoman Steps Down After 20 Years

 Kim McKay says it’s time to hand over the reins to a new generation.

Sydney: 25 August, 2009:

The co-founder and deputy chairwoman of Clean Up Australia and Clean Up the World, Kim McKay, AO, has resigned from the boards of both groups after 20 years of service.

Ms McKay, said that it was time to hand over the reins to a new generation committed to environmental action through Clean Up and to focus on her other environmental and community work. Ms McKay, who was awarded an Order of Australia (AO) in 2008 for distinguished service to the environment and the community, will continue to be recognized as co-founder of Clean Up and remains a committed supporter of both organisations.

“It’s been an incredible journey at Clean Up from when we organized the first Clean Up of Sydney Harbour back in January, 1989, to the establishment and growth of Clean Up Australia, to taking the campaign global and partnering with the United Nations Environment Progromme(UNEP) in the early 1990s.

“It’s amazing what a community of volunteers can achieve when they work together and Clean Up’s volunteers here and around the world are truly inspirational,” Ms McKay said.

“Ian Kiernan and the whole team at Clean Up continue to play an incredibly important role in the Australian and international community, raising awareness of the positive action individuals con make in improving our environment and tackling the impacts of global warming,” she said.

Mr Kiernan paid tribute to Ms McKay’s service to the Board saying that her communications and business skills along with her understanding of community participation had enabled Clean Up to develop into an international organization which has continued to attract millions of volunteers annually.

“Kim has incredible determination, vision and creative flair and Clean Up would not have developed originally without her input and hands-on role. Her contribution cannot be underestimated and we wish her the very best with her future activities and know she will continue to support Clean Up in the future,” Mr Kiernan said.

Two new board members have recently been appointed including Sally Kiernan who brings extensive marketing and new channel communication skills to the board and Mack Williams, a former senior Australian diplomat with extensive Asian experience, who is sharing his skills to broaden Clean Up the World’s impact across South East Asia.

Other current board members include Ian Kiernan, AO, Executive Chairman, Victor Kelly, John Buttle, Jenny Bonnin, and Eric Dodd.

“Our board and staff are very focused on the important environmental issues that affect all Australians and we won’t let up on putting pressure on government and industry to make the necessary changes to move to a low carbon economy.

“I’m as committed as I was on day one of clean up to ensure Australia’s environment is protected for future generations,” Kiernan said.

World Environment Day!
5 June 2009

World Environment Day (WED) was established by the UN General Assembly in 1972 to mark the opening of the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment.

Commemorated yearly on 5 June, WED is one of the principal vehicles through which the United Nations stimulates worldwide awareness of the environment and enhances political attention and action.

The day’s agenda is to:

  1. Give a human face to environmental issues;
  2. Empower people to become active agents of sustainable and equitable development;
  3. Promote an understanding that communities are pivotal to changing attitudes towards environmental issues;
  4. Advocate partnership which will ensure all nations and peoples enjoy a safer and more prosperous future.

The theme for WED 2009 is ‘Your Planet Needs You-UNite to Combat Climate Change’. It reflects the urgency for nations to agree on a new deal at the crucial climate convention meeting in Copenhagen some 180 days later in the year, and the links with overcoming poverty and improved management of forests.

For more information on WED, check out the website:  http://www.unep.org/wed/2009/english/content/about.asp
